Battle Vs Chess revealed

It’s certainly one of the more interesting game titles we have heard in a while. Battle Vs Chess? Seriously, we didn’t know that “Battle” was some kind of noun. Yet that’s the name that developer Zuxxez and publisher Topware are giving this mix of turn-based strategy and action.

Due out this May for the PC, Mac and other platforms, the game is supposed to use some kind of authentic chess algorithm as its basis. But as you can see from the screenshot above the game is also looking much different than your normal chess program. The press release announcing the game touts its many different playing environments along with some unnamed special gameplay modes and bonuses. We hope it’s as least as fun as that cool Star Wars holographic chess board on board the Millennium Falcon.

Ex-Infinity Ward heads sign up for Hollywood talent agency

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

If you though that the fired heads of Infinity Ward would be living in a van down by the river by now, think again. The Los Angeles Times web site reports that Vince Zampella and Jason West are now being represented by the big time Hollywood talent agency Creative Artists Agency.

You can bet that the folks that founded the development studio behind the powerhouse Call of Duty franchise will be getting some big offers for their next gig and CAA will likely be in a position to help them make that next big deal. Even with their current legal fight with their former publishers Activision over (allegedly) lack of bonus pay for their last game Modern Warfare 2, you can bet that West and Zampella will command a large sum of money for whomever hires them.

Kotaku Off-Topic: Butt Drugs and Dudu Chili [How Is This News?]

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

Yeah, a headline like that, you wanna know what’s inside, not what pointless thing happened to me at a stoplight yesterday. Although I did see a green-and-gold Oakland A’s Lincoln Town Car yesterday and it was so awesome I wept. More »

Valve grabs some Naughty Dog devs

Valve grabs some Naughty Dog devs screenshot

While all out confirmation that Valve is starting to really develop for the PS3 hasn’t come down the line yet, we’ve heard enough from people at the company to know that it is. At some point we’re going to see a Valve game that is fully developed by Valve on the PS3. It is going to happen and it looks like they’re taking it seriously as well. They’ve gone out and grabbed some of the top employees from Naughty Dog’s development team, and we all know how well Naughty Dog does PS3.

The new hires include Vitaliy Genkin, Alex Vlachos, and Elan Ruskin. It’s not hard to conclude that they’ve been brought on to help Valve better develop for whatever game they’re making for the PS3. As with everything Valve does, it doesn’t look like they’ll be half assing their PS3 games at all. Hopefully Naughty Dog doesn’t miss the three developers and we still have two of the best game companies around functioning at their peak.

GDC Game Developers Choice Awards have some winners

GDC Game Developers Choice Awards have some winners screenshot

In case you hadn’t noticed the Game Developer’s Conference want on this week. You should check it out, we’ve been talking about it. For the past ten years at GDC they’ve been handing out awards as part of the Game Developer’s Choice Awards. The winners are in for this year and it looks like Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 2: Among Thieves has done the best, pulling in five awards including Best Writing and the Game of the Year award. Nice to see the the developers got it right like we did.

Other big winners for the night were Runic Games’ Torchlight, which brought home the prize for Best Debut Game; Batman: Arkham Asylum by Rocksteady Studios’, which got the Best Design award; 5th Cell’s Scribblenauts, which got the Innovation Award; thatgamecompany’s Flower, which received Best Downloadable Game; Zynga’s Farmville, which won the first ever Best New Social/Online Game award.

All of those seem pretty deserving in my opinion and I struggle to come up with some other options. However, I cannot agree with their choice with Best Handheld Game, which went to the afformentioned Scribblenauts. Innovative? Yes. Best handheld game of the year? Far from it. There’s a difference between trying something new and making the best handheld game of the year. In my opinion this ranks somewhere up there with Shakespeare in Love taking the Oscar over Saving Private Ryan.

Also given out were a few special awards. John Carmack got a Lifetime Achievement award for being John Carmack. Gabe Newell received the Pioneer Award “for his work in co-creating PC key digital download service Steam, and helping to make possible some of the most important video games of recent years,” and the Penny Arcade guys received the Ambassador Award for being awesome.

Full list of prizes and winners after the jump.
