The Nexon America publishing team has done a good job getting people interested in playing their free-to-play online titles like Combat Arms and Dungeon Fighter Online. Now they are showing off a couple of upcoming games they plan to add to their library at GDC 2010. 1Up.com reports that both have already launched in Nexon’s native Korea.
One of the games is called Dragon Nest, a very colorful fantasy MMO that looks akin to a Final Fantasy game. Due in the US in early 2011, the game will focus on player-versus-enviroment play with four classes (Archer, Warrior, Cleric and Sorceress). The other new game, due in the US this fall, is Vindictus (shown above). It will have a much darker and more violent art style and will use Valve’s Source Engine as its basis.

As we mentioned earlier, Valve head man Gabe Newell picked up his Pioneer Award at the Games Developers Choice Awards on Thursday night. Some people thought we might get another new Portal 2 viral dealie during his acceptance speech, and they were not disappointed in the least. Near the end of Newell’s speech, a “Blue Screen of Death” showed up behind him.
Except that the screen seems to be a little . . different than your typical error message. The folks in the Portal 2 message boards on Steam as well as the Penny Arcade message boards have been trying to decipher what that error message really means. Their conclusion? The decoded message reads, “Suspend until E3.” That sounds like we may have to wait until mid-June for more Portal 2 info. Newell also chatted briefly with 1Up.com following the awards ceremony and stated that Portal 2 is “the best game we’ve ever done.” He also gave a big hint that a certain songwriter might return for the puzzle-action game sequel.

During GDC 2010 on Thursday night the award ceremonies for the 2010 Independent Games Festival were held. While more and more contests and awards have been launching as of late for the indie games scene, the IGF still remains the most prestigious of all these awards with many award winners turning into big critical and sales hits.
The top award, the $20,000 Seumas McNally Grand Prize for Best Independent Game, was won this year by Monaco, the co-op themed crime caper title from developer Pocketwatch Games. Monaco also won in the Excellence in Design category. In the Vision Award category, which nets the winning team $10,000 as sponsored by Direct2Drive, the winner was Max and the Magic Marker, the unique puzzle-drawing game from developer Press Play.
