Finally, finally, finally. Red 5 Studios is finally ready to tell us what the hell it has been working on since it was founded five years ago. Big Download noticed that the company would be at PAX Prime this year (as we will be) and they reached out and asked why. Turns out it’s because Red 5 will actually be announcing whatever it is it has been working on right before PAX this September.
Not only that, but a PR rep for the company also revealed that the game will be a “team-based action shooter.” Guess the ex-Blizzard employees that comprise Red 5 are going in a different direction than their former employer’s World of Warcraft. I won’t complain about that. Of course the team-based action shooter is all the rage these days so we’ll have to see what Red 5 thinks it can bring to the table.
Last Monday, indie developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment released its playable alpha build of its upcoming first person shooter-RTS game Natural Selection 2 to people who pre-ordered the Special Edition of the game (the Special Edition versions is no longer for sale). Now the developer has issued its first patch for the alpha build via Steam.
The patch has quite a number of technical and gameplay bug fixes along with a few minor additions such as adding a welding effect to MAC and adding some new new marine commander icon artwork. The standard edition of the game is still available for pre-orders for $34.95 although people who pay for the game now will not get access to the alpha builds.
Classic Game Room HD reviews the SUPER NINTENDO video game console which was released in the US in 1991. A fan favorite and many viewers’ first game system, the Super Nintendo delivered awesome video games with a 16 bit style that differed from its main rival, the Sega Genesis. Smoother visuals and that Nintendo flair for lengthy games packed with months of gameplay made the SNES game console the system to own for fans of Mario games and Zelda. Could you find Super Metroid on the Genesis, Sega CD or 32S? No! (but could you find Cosmic Carnage on the SNES… No!) This Super Nintendo video game console review shows games and the game system up close. Relive the days when competing video game consoles were actually different and played different games. Reminisce about different sound effects, music design and graphics that separated rival Nintendo from Sega. The American Super Nintendo may be built to last and works like a champ but suffers from a case of the uglies. These days many of the best Super Nintendo games can be found on the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console and downloaded for a few bucks. Games like Super Mario Kart on SNES and Super Mario World still hold their value and bring back years of memories for collectors.

The news hasn’t been good for Sega of late, at least from a financial percepective. The publisher has already admitted that sales of the long-in-development action-RPG Alpha Protocol, released about two months ago, were not good enough to justify a sequel. However Sega’s parent company Sega Sammy Holdings has reported a profit for the last quarter that ended June 30.
Revenues went up a whopping 51 percent to 91.3 billion yen for the quarter while the company generated a profit of 7 billion yen. However most of those numbers game from the pachinko and pachislot division of Sega Sammy’s business. Alpha Protocol‘s sales numbers came to just 700,000 copies worldwide (that likely includes the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 versions).

I must admit I have not had the pleasure of playing Angry Birds, but if GoNintendo’s description of the game is correct and it is indeed “like Boom Blox but with birds and pigs” it is something I will be downloading onto my iPod Touch immediately, or perhaps I should wait until the newly announced DS, PSP and PS3 versions land. Decisions, decisions.
Details are scarce on the handheld/console version of the game, so it isn’t clear if it will be updated with new features or whether it will simply be the same game. We don’t even know if it will be retail on any of the systems. All we know is that the game’s creator, Joe Wee, said, “We are also releasing it on Nintendo DS, Sony PSP and PS3,”
With so little information my impatience has won out. I am off to download it now, and regret it later.
