A lot can (and has) been argued against the use of cut-scenes in games. They are broadly seen as an archaic film mechanic that stumbled into gaming convention in an age when games were too young and naïve to put forward any other alternative. More »
Here we have Cliff Bleszinski, super-producer at Epic Games, guiding us through a demo of Bulletstorm. Watch as fools get killed in creative ways, including the use of the Leash which looks to be a lot of fun as enemies get juggled about with the energy whip.
There are two things that really stand out from Cliff’s explanation. First, he’s really proud of how visually attractive the game is, pointing out lighting effects and so forth as he goes. Next, he clearly has it in for overweight people, managing to make two fat jokes in the six minute video.
Can we come up with some other group in society that it’s acceptable to shun? Don’t get me wrong, I like pointing out the deficiencies of others as much as the next guy, but maybe we could go back to being mean to classes of people for whom there’s no chance that they’ll ever meet our cultural standards. Something based on skin color, perhaps. You know, just to mix it up a bit.
This edition of Kotaku Off Topic gives you wings. On sneakers. It’s also a great place to talk amongst yourselves about things that aren’t video games. More »

I think it’s time for another personal confession. I … wow, this is really tough. Okay. *deep breath*
I have never finished Chrono Trigger. Not once. I don’t even have any idea how far into the game I am because I have either skillfully avoided any sort of spoiler for the game or didn’t know I’d seen one when it happened. Despite my best efforts, attempting at least once yearly for a decade, the game remains sadly uncompleted.
Maybe that can change this month. Fangamer is doing a really cool event where they take on the classic Square action-RPG one chapter at a time over the course of a month. Each day brings a new section of the game to focus on and they’ve worked up some challenges everyone can attempt to do even if you’ve played the game a thousand times before. Sounds like the whole thing is a lot of fun, but they’re a few days in now so you’ll want to hurry up and get to the Village of Magic pronto.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my approach to games, particularly titles which require an unhealthy time investment that I never get around to finishing. Concluding just last night that I needed to try and tackle them one hour at a time, this event seems right up my alley.
A new 3D take on Super Mario World may not be the only thing on Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto’s mind these days. Nintendo’s famous game designer may also have plans for an all-new character and a sooner-than-you-think Pikmin sequel. More »
The Call of Duty games are not the only titles that can get double XP multiplayer events, it seems. Publisher Activision has revealed that the just released action game Transformers: War For Cybertron will be getting its own double XP weekend.
Starting at 6 pm Pacific time Friday (that’s 9 pm Eastern time) all versions of the High Moon Studios-developed game, including the PC port, will allow players to gain double the normal amount of experience points while in online multiplayer matches. The double XP weekend will end at a unannounced time on Sunday. The game allows players to make their own Transformer in multiplayer mode from four character classes and number of different weapons, skills and abilities.

The first title in Telltale’s new Pilot Program, Nelson Tethers Puzzle Agent, is now available for your purchasing and downloading pleasure. It combines the gameplay of a Professor Layton game with a dark and twisted tone to make something very strange indeed.
I’ve been playing the game for review and… well, I’ll save it for the review. It’s certainly interesting and just as soon as I can manage to solve the last of the puzzles, I’ll have a more fleshed out opinion for you. If you can’t wait, however, you can pick up the game for PC at the Puzzle Agent website. Versions for iPod, iPad and WiiWare will be arriving soon.
