Welcome to Freeware Friday, a weekly column showcasing excellent games that you can play free of charge!
Indie games tend to lean towards the format of short, sweet, and action-oriented. It’s not often that you will see an involved, strategic RPG released by an indie developer. This isn’t a matter of disliking the genre, but rather because of the time and energy necessary to make a good RPG. One of the first indie games we ever covered the release of on Big Download was The Spirit Engine 2. Two years later, the developer has decided to release it to the public for free, and despite a few minor shortcomings, it’s easily a classic. Since it doesn’t cost anything, there’s no excuse not to play it!

Ready your index finger, because you’re about to click the play/pause button a bunch of times.
As promised, GameTrailers released the debut teaser trailer for the Treyarch-developed Call of Duty: Black Ops. The key word here is “teaser,” folks — the gameplay is A) shown in ridiculously short snippets and B) hard to make out. Like I said, be ready to press that handy pause button.
We were told Black Ops will take us to such locations as the Arctic, Cuba, and Vietnam. Based on what’s shown here, that’s definitely looking accurate. I’ll be interested to hear if the flashbacks are as integral to the game as this video would have us believe.
On that note, anything that reminds me of Jacob’s Ladder is a good thing.

EA has released the Skate 3 TV ad and it barely shows the game off! A majority of the commercial is of people going bat sh*t crazy as others are skateboarding on the ramp. The commercial ends with a few seconds of actual Skate 3 gameplay, which I guess is just enough to get the TV viewing audience interested in the game.
Skate 3 is out on May 11 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. For more on the game, check out Ben PerLee’s preview. Also, is that a horse at the very end of the ad about to skate on the ramp?! Rad!

Are you ready for yet another zombie game? Headup Games hopes you are. The German developer who recently released the turn-based sci-fi strategy game Future Wars go in a new direction for their newly announced title Trapped Dead, a tactical real time strategy game where you have to deal with the undead.
Set in the early 1980s in a fictional small town in Missouri, the game centers on two college boys who find themselves dealing with the local folk who have been infected with a zombie-like virus. The game will also support co-op for up to four players. The game’s official web site is already up but it only shows a Flash-based trailer with a few screenshots. Trapped Dead is looking to eat you, er, be released this November.

The mass exodus at Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward continues and, not surprisingly, a large number of those team members that have left Activision have joined up with Respawn Entertainment, the new developer formed by the fired-by-Activision Infinity Ward founders Vince Zampella and Jason West.
G4TV.com reports that a total of 16 former Infinity Ward team members have now updated their LinkedIn online resumes to indicated their new employment at Respawn Entertainment. The new company already has a pretty sweet publishing deal with Electronic Arts that allows Respawn to retain ownership of any games made by the developer. As G4TV points out that’s exactly the kind of deal Activision just gave Bungie for their new 10 year publishing agreement. Now if we can just get Respawn a web site designer.

This week, Kotaku’s reviews took the fight to the streets and to the skies. They fought battles in the Old West and feudal Japan. And they involved one unsightly beanbag, nearly capable of launching a kitty cat into the stratosphere. More »
