Ubisoft inspired by Left 4 Dead’s multiplayer

Ubisoft inspired by Left 4 Dead's multiplayer screenshot

Now that you know all about Splinter Cell Conviction’s multiplayer you’re probably wondering if it’s actually going to be any good. If you have faith in the quality of games that inspired by other games then you should have faith that the multiplayer co-op in Conviction is going to kick some major ass. Ubisoft is saying that the took a lot of inspiration for it from Valve’s Left 4 Dead.

When asked what influenced the creating of the game Patrick Redding discussed the earlier Splinter Cell games before describing how the co-op came about. “A lot of my own personal feelings about co-operative play in Conviction were strongly influenced by the campaigns in Ghost Recon, Gears Of War 2 and Left 4 Dead - it’s just trying to find ways to encourage players to work together without necessarily forcing them to by making them jump through the bottle neck,” he told CVG.

Those are some pretty big names to be tossing out there. Hopefully he isn’t just tossing them around to garner a headline and some press and they actually took heed to what works so well in the co-op in those games.

Final Fantasy XIV PC beta to launch March 11

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Final Fantasy XIV PC beta to launch March 11 screenshot

We just told you that Final Fantasy XI was getting some brand new content, but who wants to play an old game like that? Old games are so old. New games are where it’s at. The problem is that you can’t play a new Final Fantasy MMO at the moment. However, the wait appears to be very short as Square Enix has announced that the beta for Final Fantasy XIV will be launching on March 11.

The announcement was made at VanaFest 2010, which is sadly not a festival dedicated to Vana White, but one dedicated to Final Fantasy XI players. It’s a closed beta available to a very limited number of invitees that were selected from the pool collected in December. It will be expanding, however, as the beta progresses. For now the beta is simply PC, but that will change as well at some point in the future.

Anyone know that they’re in?

The award gives $10,000 to a game that has “new ideas and concepts that will help spark innovation in gaming”.

PS3s Suffering From Global Network Lockdown [Psn]

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

All around the world, PlayStation 3 consoles simply aren’t working like they’re supposed to, with a PlayStation Network error preventing people from not just going online, but from playing some PS3 games offline as well.

From Europe to the Americas to, well, my house in Australia, users (mostly of older “Fat” consoles, those released before 2009’s “PS3 Slim”) are complaining that upon booting their consoles up, they’re unable to sign into their accounts, check their trophies, use dynamic themes or access the PlayStation Network. That’s fine, Sony say there are PSN connection problems, and that they are “looking into it”.

Problem is, the error does more than just prevent you from going online. It prevents you from playing certain games offline as well. The screen above is what I was greeted with when attempting to play Heavy Rain, and pressing out of it simply reboots the PS3, returning you to the main menu screen. It’s the same story for other games that feature dynamic trophy support.

Sony say “stay tuned” for updates on the problem. In turn, we’ve emailed Sony for comment and will update if we hear anything more.

While theories abound that this has something to do with the calendar (some users are reporting their date/time settings have been reset), bear in mind Sony has redesigned its PlayStation website over the weekend, so it’s likely the result of some tinkering under the hood for the PlayStation Network.

Whichever it is, though, you have to wonder at the design process that turns a network outage into something stopping you from playing an offline, singleplayer title.

Money Well Spent [Night Note]

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

To: Luke
From: Owen

This past week I got my taxes done – because I lived in three states last year, and other circumstances, I figured a professional was the best way to go. The bill wasn’t so bad. California got nothing. Considering how badly they screwed up my vehicle title transfer, and rejected my unemployment claim, I kind of smiled at that.

The accountant almost apologized when she told me I owed money to South Carolina, where I’d lived for four months with my grandfather. “It’s $12,” she said.

But I kind of like it that I have to pay taxes there. It puts a final certification on the four months I spent with Granddad. They were some very good times in my life, giving me have plenty of memories of my grandfather. You can’t put any price tag on such things, but I will definitely consider it money well spent.

Some of what you missed:
Activision Terminates Fan-Made King’s Quest Extension
Kotaku ‘Shop Contest: Next-Gen Cereal System Edition
Final Fantasy XI to Get Three Expansions in 2010
An Eyes-On Sneak Peek At Tron Legacy… In 3D!!!
Teen Convicted of Crashing PlayStation Web Site Because He Was Banned for Cheating
Stick Jockey: More Than Money, Licenses Give a League Control
Fallout 2’s Rejected ‘Childkiller’ Icon is, Uh, Whoa …

Natal Marketing Effort Targeting Women’s Magazines [Project Natal]

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

You know those women’s magazines like Glamour and Cosmopolitan that promise BIG SEX NEWS every single month? Well, if a report’s to be believed, they’re going to be delivering BIG NATAL NEWS as the product nears release.

MCV reports that Microsoft’s ramping up marketing plans for Natal that go after Nintendo’s top-of-mind awareness in nontraditional games niches. Celebrity endorsements will be a factor of a campaign that targets “the parenting press, toy retailers and publications which primarily cater for non-gamers.”

That would include Vogue and all those magazines with hot unattainable women you pretend not to notice when you’re buying Hot Pockets at the Safeway. MCV said Microsoft invited “an elite selection of media” and other non-games firms to a VIP showcase to talk about Natal. Presumably, these were the types of magazines invited. I can’t wait until Glamour starts telling us about that secret thing Milo wishes we would do, but is too afraid to ask.

Fan made King’s Quest game project shut down by Activision

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

The long time efforts of a group of fans of the King’s Quest series to continue the adventure game franchise in a non-commercial release have finally been shut down after eight years of work. Today the official web site for the game, The Silver Lining, announced that the project is shutting down after the game franchise’ current owners Activision would not grant the Phoenix Online Studios team permission to work on the game.

The fan made project began in 2002 as an attempt to continue the series that was originally developed by Sierra Online. While the team did get the rights to make a non-commercial version by King’s Quest’s previous owners Vivendi Games, it appears that the property’s new owners at Activision didn’t want development of the fan made game to continue. No specific reason was given for Activision’s decision. The development team was apparently prepping to finally release The Silver Lining this spring . In a note on their now sparse web site, the team stats they don’t know what their future holds but, ” . . . we hope the teamwork and rapport we’ve developed won’t go to waste.”
