Sims 3 just $30 at EA’s download store today

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Valve isn’t the only company offering surprise sales of its games. For the past few days Valve has been offering Team Fortress 2 for just $2.50 or $2.49 for a couple of hours each day. Now Electronic Arts is offering a special Halloween themed sale (via it’s own download store) for The Sims 3.

Yep, the best selling people sim game is available to purchase and download for today only for $29.99. That’s a saving of $20 compared to its normal $49.99 price. Not quite as good as picking up Team Fortress 2 for almost nothing but it will save you some money when the first expansion pack, The Sims 3 World Adventures, is released later in November.

Zombie BBQ now out for DSiWare in Europe

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Zombie BBQ now out for DSiWare in Europe screenshot

Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ has been released for DSiWare in Europe this past week. The game is going for 800 Nintendo Points and it’s unknown if this is actually the full retail game or a trimmed down version. Don’t expect an American DSiWare release as the game is already in physical form over here in the States (and cheap too!)

Speaking of Zombie BBQ, TinyCartridge has a bunch of character art of stuff that didn’t make it into the game like the image above. Their images include a sexy version of the main hero and Santa Claus riding on top of a dead Reindeer with its testicles showing also. So yeah, totally not safe for work stuff.

BioWare news: Halloween wallpaper and Dragon Age: Origins tournament winner

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

BioWare is celebrating Halloween today with special holiday themed wallpapers for both of their upcoming games: the fantasy RPG Dragon Age: Origins and their sci-fi RPG Mass Effect 2. The Dragon Age: Origins wallpapers are pretty blatant but the one for Mass Effect 2 is a little bit more subtle.

Meanwhile the Warden’s Quest tournament for Dragon Age: Origins that was held in London earlier this week is long over. The four man team from Hungary emerged as the winner of the tournament as they beat a four man team gathered from the BioWare community. The team from the US came in ninth out of 10 teams. Bummer.

Industry Types Confess the Evil Deeds They’ve Done (in Games) [Evil]

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

What’s the most cruel, unfair, downright evil thing you’ve done in a game? Bitmob polled some industry types with the question. Hal Halpin was a real jerk in Mario Kart 64; Todd Howard created a suicide squad in X-Com.

Halpin, the Entertainment Consumers Association’s president, deployed the lightning bolt with ruthlessness on fellow racers attempting to jump the gorge on the stadium track. “Like my character [Wario], I rarely hesitated in sending other racers off the cliff,” Halpin answered.

Todd Howard, the executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios, came up with a failsafe against his men getting mind-controlled by aliens in X-Com. Since they dropped their weapons under an alien spell, he equipped them with live grenades that, when dropped, went boom. No more mind control problem. No more soldiers, either, but that’s their problem.

Of course, there’s a lot of evil done in the Sims (a franchise with a capacity for cruelty unlike many others), Knights of the Old Republic, and plenty of RPGs, for that matter. One guy even gratuitously shot up all the cows in Call of Juarez. Check it out. And tell us about all the innocent people you’ve wasted with a headshot, down in the comments.

Ten Minute Taste: Inferno Pool

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

It takes a couple of shots of fine liquor before I feel loose enough to play pool. I blow at the game, and I realize that. It’s comical how my suckiness translates to pool videogames, as you’ll observe in the above TMT for Inferno Pool.

Inferno Pool
is now available on Xbox LIVE Arcade and PSN, costing about ten bones on both digital platforms. The name of the game is the key here — this isn’t exactly a run-of-the-mill pool videogame. It has a touch of, uh, hardcore to it. The tables, from what I’ve seen thus far, are unkempt and edgy, looking as if they belong in Silent Hill. The announcer carries a bite, too, as he calls out things Unreal Tournament-style.

But it is a pool game. It features 8-ball and 9-ball and adheres to many of the conventions we’re familiar with: standardized rule sets, decent aiming aids, and free camera control. The most ambitious addition — outside of the presentation stuff — is the mode “Inferno Pool,” which is a mode where players race to knock as many balls into the table’s pockets as possible. With each sunk ball, the player earns the ability to fire said ball onto his opponents table, messing up his shots in the process.

In the TMT, I exclusively played the mode Inferno Pool, so you can see the name of the game in action. Check it out.
