A Snapshot Of The World’s PC Gaming Rigs [PC]

Monday, August 31st, 2009

I just logged into my Steam account, and was asked to take part in a hardware survey. You all know what that means. It means it’s time to take a look at Valve’s latest hardware survey results!

Released periodically over Valve’s online marketplace and gaming service, the immense popularity of Steam means these figures (the results of which are gathered from millions of users across the world) give us the best idea possible of just what makes up the “average” setup for the “average” PC gamer out there.

Here are the July 2009 results. To see them in more detail, hit the link below.

Square Enix Considering Final Fantasy XIII DLC [FFXIII]

Monday, August 31st, 2009

The worse kind of DLC is stuff that should be in the game, but isn’t. The best DLC adds to the game experience.

Square Enix is currently churning over the idea of including DLC for upcoming role-playing-game Final Fantasy XIII. Says FFXIII producer Yoshinori Kitase, “Our plans for [Xbox Live and PlayStation Network] are currently unclear.”

“We are exploring the option of downloadable content, perhaps adding new areas, items or enemies,” the producer added, “but these would not be expansions to the story, only the gameplay. The entire story of FFXIII will be on the disc.” As it should be!

PS3 Firmware 3.0 Is Live [Sony]

Monday, August 31st, 2009

The new firmware update has it, bringing new XMB functionality, a status indicator, a friends list redesign, dynamic themes, avatars, and much more.

Free and premium avatars show up in your status bar, but the most prevalent of the changes is a status bar in the top right of the screen, which shows your avatar, your user icon, what you are up to, and a mail icon, in case you have messages waiting. Messages from your friends now appearing in their respective profiles.

The games and video categories of the cross media bar will now feature shortcuts to the PlayStation Store, reflecting downloadable content and related items available.

Firmware 3.0 is supposedly the last major PS3 firmware update this year.

Next EVE Online expansion coming this winter

Monday, August 31st, 2009

It’s not exactly a shock to learn today that developer CCP plans to release a new free content expansion for their space-based MMO EVE Online. Coming this winter, EVE Online Dominion will be the 11th such free expansion for the popular MMO.

Among the new features coming to Dominion will be a revamp of the alliance warfare gameplay model along with pirate missions, the first parts of a new social networking feature called COSMOS, visual revamps of planets and more. CCP will discuss the expansion pack during the Penny Arcade Expo this weekend. However they do not plan to discuss the just announced Dust 514 console game at PAX 2009. It’s likely they are holding off until their Fanfest in October to reveal more details.

The Most Epic ‘M’ Rating Any Game Ever Got [Brutal Legend]

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Brütal Legend’s ESRB rating summary just went up, and damn right it got an M – for MËTÅL. Double Fine’s reaction, according to the Brütal Legend Twitter, was something along the lines of a “hell yeah it is!”

The ESRB’s full listing is honest and straightforward, but I can’t help but be taken back to the days of the PMRC and its incredulous, chapter-and-verse descriptions of all the hideous things bands like Megadeth and Slayer put into their lyrics, which we already knew about like back in the sixth grade, duh.

Read it for yourself. It is an unusually meaty entry. For some it’s a warning. For others, one of the greatest testimonials the game could hope to have.

Brütal Legend

Platform: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

Rating: Mature

Content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes

Rating summary: This is an action adventure/role-playing game that tells the story of Eddie Riggs, a roadie who is transported to a mythical world of heavy metal rock. Eddie is armed with a guitar and a double-headed axe, which players can use to slash and dismember enemies. Players can also perform “face-melting solos” (literally melting enemies’ faces), meet humanoid creatures dressed like dominatrixes and brandishing whips, and liberate an army of rockers from a life of oppression. Although the storyline is often irreverent and whimsical, the depictions of violence are somewhat intense: Undead humanoids are dismembered with an axe (sometimes in slow-motion); a “Steel-Quilled Blade” causes human enemies to explode into gibs that rain down; machine guns, missile launchers, and sub woofers can be used to kill druids and other fantastical creatures. Eddie can also run over dozens of enemies with his hot rod, resulting in blood effects and more heads and limbs getting chopped off. During the course of the game, characters sometimes engage in suggestive dialogue intended for comedic effect (e.g., “Maybe with all your feedback, you guys could just blow me over the gorge” and “Playtime’s over. Now let’s get back to the orgy”). Players will also encounter “Skull Rakers” clad in bondage gear and amazon-like warriors dressed in leather outfits that partially reveal buttocks and breasts. Strong profanity (e.g., “f*ck,” “sh*t,” and “d*ck”) can be heard in the dialogue.

Jade Raymond to head up new Ubisoft Toronto dev studio

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Filed under:

One of the most well known people at Ubisoft (and let’s face one of the best looking game developers period) has just gotten a promotion. Jade Raymond has just been named the head of the publisher’s recently revealed development studio in Toronto.

Raymond previously gained fame as the producer for Ubisoft’s hit Assassin’s Creed which was developed at Ubisoft’s Montreal studio. As head of the new Toronto team, Raymond will still report to Yannis Mallat, who is the CEO of both Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Toronto. The Toronto office will open by the end of 2009 but at the moment there’s no word on what specific games Raymond will be in charge of at the new studio.

Activision Boss Bets Games Will “Eclipse” Movies, TV [Activision]

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Bobby Kotick, chief executive officer at Activision Blizzard and hero to gamers everywhere, is nothing if not confident. He’s so confident in the video game industry that he sees the potential for it to surpass movies and TV.

That may be because his company is sitting on some of gaming’s biggest franchises—Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Guitar Hero—or that Kotick’s just a little power hungry. But he tells Barrons, “I view the medium as having the potential to eclipse film and television.” And quickly. In five years or so.

Bob may have a point. Much has been made of the decline of television viewership in favor of other distractions, including the internet and video games, both of which can take away valuable screen time from Hollywood’s cinematic and televised offerings. Plus, the TV doesn’t even have a snazzy plastic peripheral one can play with.

Well, with the exception of the TV remote.

Monday, August 31st, 2009

If you enjoy some weird videos to go along with the launching of a new game web site then the Serious Sam HD site, launched today, is just what you are looking for. The site, designed to promote the upcoming graphical revamp of Croteam’s debut first person shooter.

In addition to the usual info, screenshots and videos from the game, the Serious Sam HD site offers up YouTube-based video “testimonials” from seemingly average folks talking about how Serious Sam HD has changed their lives. Well, most of them are normal . . .the headless kamikaze guy isn’t exactly all there (if you know what we mean and we think you do).
